Finally, a place where the ‘quirks and features’ bit is actually informative since there are so many little odd things that you never see or read about (door and panel latches, dome lights and other unusual bits that nobody but Doug would ever mention). As is typical with DD’s videos there are those facepalm moments, but it just wouldn’t be a DD video without them.
At least the score is where it should be, although I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t higher.

I would like to disagree, In some of the categories Doug was very generous, probably more than he should have been. Don’t get me wrong I love the car, but based on the scale he uses, it definitely should score lower.

I hope I’m not the only person who bets bored of Doug videos within a couple minutes. BUT, i watched about 30 minutes of this F1 video. This car legitimately has a ton of quirks...and features.
Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that Doug’s career took off the way it did, it’s just not my thing 80% of the time.

When Jay puts on the throttle: H oly Lord. Best sounding engine ever.

Didn’t even properly cover the lightweight engine cover latch, and how the top piece pushes a rod that locks the lower piece in place.
Still an interesting car nonetheless but it deserves an interesting presenter.

My two main takeaways from this video:
1.) For as excited and giddy as Doug seemed while discussing the car (justifiably so), I appreciate him staying somewhat unbiased while doing the Doug Score. While the scoring is subjective in the end, I was expecting him to just give it 10's across the board because of the car that it is and how many times he referred to it as “the greatest car ever made”. That he actually gave some low scores and kept the scoring inline with other cars actually impressed me.
2.) I found it really facinating how Jay Leno seemed so non-chalant about the car. After 20 years, and a massive collection of unbelievably great cars, it’s not necessary surprising. But at the same time, it almost came across that he needed to try to find ways to speak highly of the car. You can sense he has an appreciation for the car and knows what it is, but where most people would be as joyful as Doug was simply to be near the car, Jay almost seemed like it was just another car in his collection, and certainly not one he considered to be “the greatest”.

No seriously, wasn’t this thing meant to be the best a roadcar could be, and the speed record was just an nice side effect?

That’s true. And don’t forget that it won outright at Le Mans, not just in its class, beating even the prototypes. And this was in a roadcar that had to be horsepower restricted in order to race. How often can you say that the stock roadgoing version of a car is more powerful than the racing version? There may be faster or more technologically advanced cars out there, but I love the F1 for the purity of the design and focus of its designers. We may never see anything like this again.

Things like that is why even though I’m all for the Speedtail, I just can’t look at it and see an F1 successor. It’s chasing a bullet point on the F1's brochure, not what truly gave the F1 it’s legendary status. The P1 and Senna after it did the a pex roadcar thing better than the Speedtail likely will.

I turn the playback speed to at least 1.5 and as high as 2.0 for his videos. He talks too slow (for me) and I don’t really lose any value or content. Hoovie is at least 1.75x but usually 2.0x.

From Jay’s perspective, the F1 has gotten so valuable that now he can’t really use it as a car anymore, he himself stated in the video that it’s not a car he drives if he actually needs to be somewhere. It is now an “A to A” car instead of a legitimate mode of transportation. As fantastic as the driving experience may be, it has been relegated to supremely expensive amusement park ride.
That’s why I respect Rowan Atkinson so much, he Daily’d
his F1, and had multiple crashes with it. Rebuilt every time, and put back on the road every time.

17" wheels. Like on my ‘05 Mazda 3 hatch.

But at fast playback, the pitch of his voice gets even higher!

I like to think that some of the engineers that worked on it were still around when they designed & built the engine for my car...

I think you hit the wrong reply, homie.

Nope. The F1 has 17" wheels. Road car.
